Location information for Agrigento

Agrigento city is on the south coastline of Sicily in Italy. It is the capital of the Agrigento province. It is famous for being the site where an ancient Greek city called Akragas (??????? in Greek) was originally, which was a major city for the Magna Graecia area in Ancient Greece times.

Agrigento was constructed on a cliff, situated to near the southern coast of Sicily, it dates back to ancient Greek times and remnants of the old city can still be seen. It is hugged by two nearby rivers, the Akragas River and the Hypsas River. These rivers made defense of the city easy during war times. The hill also means it is a safe 230 miles above sea level, directly parallel to Ionian's coast.

Agrigento is a major player for tourism, attracting many interested in viewing its uniquely Greek archeology. Hence, transport is good and it is very easy to pickup a car rental in Agrigento Downtown. Surprisingly, nowadays this is amongst the poorest towns for all off Italy, so tourism is really helping the locals get back on their feet.
